The hidden worlds powering Singapore

Keeping Singapore running 24/7 requires a massive energy ecosystem that most of us rarely have to think about.

Our power grid
and its guardians

Deep underground lies Singapore's power grid infrastructure, a vast network of cables and equipment that carry electricity across our island.

But the grid doesn't run on its own.

Anchoring our energy security

Nearly 95% of Singapore’s electricity is generated using imported natural gas. Along with pipeline imports, the Singapore LNG terminal on Jurong Island plays an important role in supporting a stable and reliable electricity supply.

Here, liquefied natural gas arrives from around the world.

It is stored, converted back into a gaseous state, and piped directly into power plants that supply electricity to Singapore's grid.

Out on Jurong Island, professionals operate and maintain the systems and infrastructure that keep Singapore's electricity supply secure.

Harnessing the sun

While natural gas powers most of Singapore today, we are also expanding domestic sources of clean energy. One example is the floating solar farm at Tengeh Reservoir, where more than 122,000 solar panels turn sunlight into electricity.

The Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm is one of the world’s largest inland floating solar installations. It can generate enough clean electricity to power about 16,000 four-room flats each year, with specially designed panels built to withstand Singapore’s humid conditions.

From underground power grids to offshore terminals and solar farms, these hidden worlds and our people behind them keep Singapore powered.

Energy security is something most of us rarely see, but it is carefully built, maintained and strengthened every day to keep Singapore running.
